In Mexico we celebrate a wonderful tradition called Las Posadas. It is basically a reenactment of Mary and Joseph seeking shelter on the night of Jesus’ birth, being refused over and over again, until finally finding shelter. It is done in a descriptive song that is simple and beautiful. The musical phrases repeat over and over until they are etched in your soul forever. It is usually done in the evening by candlelight.
I am grateful that my children have all experienced a “Posada.” They have done it with relatives in Mexico, and once at my parents’ house.
The following video has a good description of how one Mexican family renders the tradition. It is very typical.
