New River Trail State Park

It was a beautiful day yesterday in the Blue Ridge! Low seventies, mostly sunny, lots of shade along the trail, and not many people two days before the holiday weekend. The New River Trail State Park is a 57 mile stretch in southwestern Virginia that is one of the rails-to-trails conversions. It meanders alongside the New River, which is already a good sized river at this point, even though it is not too far from its origin in North Carolina. There are many points of access to the trail. We hopped on at Foster’s Falls, which is only about an hour and 15 minutes from our house. I assume this is a rail car from the old line that once travelled this trail.

Here’s Gail on the trail, with the river on the right.

And yours truly…

The trail is shared by bikes, hikers, and horses!

There are many places where you can rent bikes (though we brought our own, of course), horses, or things for having fun on the water.

It really was a great ride! On our way out, we took this shot of the area we had just ridden. You can see I-77 where it bridges over the New River. You can see the beautiful countryside, and an arm of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the background. We’ll be coming back to bike the other segments of the trail, for sure!

  1. How fun. Enjoy every moment of this most beautiful countryside.

Have a terrific day and weekend and especially a very happy Independence Day. Big hug to you both. 🙂

  2. Oh come along on the bloggers cruise. It would be great to meet you and Gail. It would be more than great. Annie's number in under my cruise countdown graphic. Just use that booking code and you're in business. She will indeed treat you like royalty.

Make your dinner time at 6 so we can all go see the shows if we want. Okay we can work off some of the food before bedtime too. Woo hoo! Let's go cruising. Big hug to you both. 🙂

  3. Love the pictures! I wondered how your trip went (sorry I wasn't around to check before this but I was out of town.) This definitely looks like something Gene and I would enjoy doing. I don't miss the I-77 long drive to NC when our daughter was there but it was a pretty drive. Now we're stuck on the OH-PA turnpike to the east coast and it's not fun at all!

  4. Hello Ferd! Forgive me if I'm repeating myself, I keep doing something wrong here. I type, hit a key and it all disappears. I'm no more computer literate than I was 6 months ago 😉

Anywho, looks like you and Gail are having a wonderful time in your new home state! So happy for you. Beautiful pictures, very much enjoyed seeing them. Hope you and your family are all doing well. My time to move is getting closer. Andy will graduate next year so I'm gearing up! I'm going to send you a separate email, have a couple questions for you. Take care, Bonnie

  5. Gorgeous pictures! And riding along the river? What more could you ask for? I love the sound of running river water. So peaceful. Love the red caboose too!
